Long Island, Bahamas.
Less than 300 miles from Fort Lauderdale Florida and only 145 miles from Nassau. Is an island paradise named Long Island, with a population of less than 4000 people who enjoy a slow, old fashioned way of life.
Long Island is a safe, clean and perfect hideaway far from the busy world most people know, with beautiful white beaches, clear aqua waters and a natural sea breeze.
The contrasting coastlines here make Long Island one of the most scenic Out Island destinations in the entire Bahamas, the western coast has soft white sandy beaches and the eastern side falls down to the ocean with dramatic rocky cliffs and private coves with hidden shell beaches. No more than 4 miles wide, Long Island really lives up to its name. The Queens Highway runs for almost 80 miles as it meanders through some 35 settlements and farming towns. You are sure to find a small cafe or restaurant to take a break to eat delicious local dishes made from fresh fish and conch. The scenery on the road changes from old buildings surrounded by dry-stone walls with shallow bays on the lee side and rugged headlands on the east coast.
The northern end of the island has sea cliffs unique in the Bahamas.
Columbus named the island's northern tip Cape Santa Maria, to honor of one of his ships. The area has truly stunning beaches, in fact Cape Santa Maria has one of the worlds top ten beaches. Columbus Point, located half a mile north of the primary beach resort in Cape Santa Maria offers tremendous views of the protected harbour Columbus sailed into.
Stella Maris is another major resort area on Long Island. It is located 12 miles south of Cape Santa Maria. Visitors headed to either Cape Santa Maria or Stella Maris can fly into the Stella Maris International Airport.

Diving in the Bahamas.
Snorkeling and diving.
The islands of the Bahamas offer world class diving. Few places in the world offer a wider variety of diving opportunities, including wrecks and reefs, blue holes and drop-offs, sea gardens, caves, walls, shallow shoals and encounters with dolphins and sharks.
With hundreds of islands, the Bahamas has literally thousands of dive sites within its crystal clear waters. The islands offer a year long diving season, with water temperatures ranging from 76F in the winter in the Northern Bahamas to 84'F throughout the islands in the summer.
For the most stunning peek at the watery underworld, head to the Out Islands. From the tip of Bimini to the utmost region of Great Inagua, divers can experience all the Islands Of The Bahamas have to offer. The Abacos, Bimini, Andros, Eleuthera, Cat Island, San Salvador, Long Island and Exuma almost ensure a never ending parade of marine life. Top dive sites include huge coral pinnacles, 60 feet tall, pierced with tunnels and caverns. There is an abundance of great dives, including wrecks, blue holes, caves, walls, dolphins and sharks.

Sailing.
These Islands are the most popular winter cruising area for North American sailors. Starting around 50 miles from the coast of Florida, they stretch close to 700 miles. They encompass nearly 700 coral islands, with only about 30 inhabited.
The waters are warm, transparent, with an unbelievable range of colors from the palest translucent green to a deep indigo.
Hundreds of square miles are shallow waters, but off the east coasts of the island chains depths quickly reach hundreds and even thousands of feet.
Tides do not exceed three feet, but yachts drawing more than 5 feet may only be able to traverse some of the shallowest channels close to high tide. The prevailing winds are the easterly Trades, interrupted only by occasional northers reaching down from the United States in the winter months and tropical depressions in the summer months.
Recommended reading for anyone sailing here is the "Yachtsman's Guide To The Bahamas" available in most book shops, Ebay.com or Amazon.com, buy a copy you won't regret it.
Try to avoid the crowded and noisy tourist centers of Nassau on New Providence Island, and West End and Freeport on Grand Bahama Island, although if approaching from Miami or Fort Lauderdale these marinas are difficult to avoid being the ports of entry.
Beyond lie the Out Islands, there are so many beautiful anchorages that it's difficult to list them, favored areas are the Southern Out Islands, particularly Long Island and the Exumas, which are considered the best cruising grounds on Earth.
